JOB SUMMARY The Urban Forestry Student-Intern assists the City of Tifton’s Urban Forestry Professional (UFP) to manage and maintain the City’s community forest. Please note: This is a grant funded position awarded by the Urban and Community Forestry Trees Across Georgia Grant Program. The position will be offered while funds are available.

MAJOR DUTIES
- In coordination with, and under the guidance of the UFP, the Student-Intern inspects, evaluates and monitors park and right-of-way trees for tree health and public safety and makes recommendations to UFP regarding tree care, pruning, planting and removal and executes these activities.
- Assists with planting, watering, pruning, and maintenance of trees on public property.
- Assists the UPF with developing educational information materials and programs; coordinating community forestry events; and providing citizen assistance and customer service related to tree issues.
- Operates a motor vehicle safely.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the UFP.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED
- Familiarity with Urban forestry principles and practices
- Grammar sufficient to clearly relay information to all audiences

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS This position will be supervised by the Urban Forestry Professional.

GUIDELINES Guidelines include City policies and procedures, safety procedures and the guidelines of the Employee Handbook.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The purpose of this position is to maintain the City’s community forest. Work consists of related equipment operation duties.

CONTACTS Contacts are typically with co-workers, citizens, contractors and board members.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed while outdoors intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License
- Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a related field with course work in urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a natural resources related field.
