Agenda: 

9 a.m -11 a.m.  Soil Care Methods for PHC:  Demonstration of common soil care equipment and techniques for PHC.
11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Diagnostics: From ground to crown. How to recognize signs and symptoms of disease and problems in the urban forest. 
12 p.m. -1 p.m.  Lunch
1p.m.-2 p.m. Insects in landscape Trees: To spray or not to spray?  The presentation will cover common insect pests in landscape trees and will include information about when to consider insecticides and other options, including natural biocontrol.
2 p.m.-3 p.m. PGRs: When, Where, How and Why of using Plant Growth Regulators in tree care applications
3 p.m. - 4 p.m.  Speaking to clients about PHC - Best practices for communication so that your clients understand the care being provided to their trees and are invested in the process.


Lunch will be provided. 

Meet our Speakers: 

Patrick Anderson from Rainbow Ecoscience

Patrick Anderson is an Arborologist with Rainbow Ecoscience where he provides plant healthcare protocol training and support for Rainbow’s clients nationwide. He has years of practical tree care experience, and conducts field research trials throughout the U.S., with emphasis on plant growth regulators and landscape scale management. Patrick frequently gives talks and guest lectures for green industry groups, and has authored numerous articles on tree and shrub care. Patrick has a B.S. in Forest Science from Penn State University, is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist and Municipal Specialist, ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist, a North Carolina Licensed Landscape Contractor, and is currently a member of the Revision Subcommittee for the ANSI 300 Part 2 Soil Management. In addition, Patrick serves as a TreeMaster for TreesCharlotte.

Dr. Christopher Fields-Johnson from Davey

Dr. Chris Fields-Johnson is the Tree Conservation Specialist and Technical Advisor for the Mid-Atlantic region for the Davey Institute, providing technical support to Davey plant health care operations and expertise in soil, water, and root zone management across the United States and Canada. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.Sc.in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, and graduated Summa cum laude with a B.Sc. in Forest ResourceManagement from Virginia Tech. His graduate work included research on the reforestation of surface mined lands in the Appalachian coal field and the development of biochar to improve the rehabilitation of impaired soils. His current research is on recycling urban forest green waste to optimize plant-soil-water relationships.He lives with his wife and two children in Charlottesville, Virginia where they enjoy hiking, cycling, and kayaking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Dr. Elizabeth McCarty from UGA

Elizabeth McCarty is the Forest Health Specialist with the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. Her areas of specialization include forest entomology, insecticide use in trees, environmental risk of insecticides, and aquatic entomology. 

Alex Ferguson from ArborKi

Alex Ferguson is a certified arborist, TRAQ qualified, and the owner of Arbor Kí Tree Solutions, which provides PHC support services to companies within the tree care industry. Alex began his career in his early teens, working for retirees and master gardeners, which developed his interest in the green industry. After completing his degree in Horticulture from the University of Georgia, he pursued further education in the industry, focusing on arboriculture. Since discovering PHC, he has been committed to fostering a positive public view and promoting the adoption of preventative tree care.
