Lunch and Learn: Managing the Ecology of Our Urban Forest

Monthly Virtual Training:

Managing the Ecology of Our Urban Forest

1 CEU applied for

In this webinar, Eric Duncan will provide valuable insights into how our Urban Forests are indeed true forests and will show simple ways to manage the ecological aspects of these forests. The presentation will focus on how the ecological needs of our urban forests are not often in contradiction to the needs of our clients. It will then focus on how adding these aspects of forest management to our vocabulary and skill sets will make participating arborists stand out even more from random tree removal companies. Some topics will include: suitable basal area projections, invasive species removal, the importance of fallen leaf retention, and native understory plants that are both beautiful and good for birds.

"Adding Plant Health Care to our recommendations may have seemed new and non consequential ten years ago. Today it is a regular part of our lives and our work and many of us have witnessed the benefits that PHC provides to our clients and our communities. I believe that incorporating the ecological aspects of our urban forest into our daily client interactions will have just as large of an impact. Not only is it good for our clients and our forest but it is good for business. Beyond that it is good for our ecosystem and morally imperative that we use our position of trust to show our clients that we are available to help them holistically manage their forest."

Presented by:

Eric Duncan -- Botanist/Arborist

Eric Duncan is a conservation botanist and arborist focused on native plants, pollinators and the health of our urban ecosystems. His has spanned forestry, horticulture, education, land management and arboriculture. Through the past 30 years of his life the lines between these career fields have blurred and begun to fade away. He no longer sees a need to separate these specialties and is trying to show his fellow arborists that they have a unique opportunity to sync these disciplines for our clients and deliver a more comprehensive service to our communities and our shared ecosystem.
