About the GAA
The Georgia Arborist Association is a resource for tree owners and tree professionals.
Our Mission
To promote safe and proper arboriculture practices in the state of Georgia through networking, training, and public education; and to be a voice for the professional arborists who manage and care for Georgia’s trees.
The GAA has 968 members, 15 members of our Board of Directors, and a database of 4,000 tree care industry professionals. We drive enhancements in the arboriculture industry in Georgia by providing varied education, networking, and outreach opportunities. Encouraging and training arborists to become certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is the main vehicle we use to improve arboricultural practices in our state.
A GAA History
The roots of the Georgia Arborist Association (GAA) go back to 1972, when Hugh Tyer and several private tree care operators banded together as the Atlanta Arborist Association to discuss their trade. This group continued to meet for many years. In 1982, they began to meet at set locations on the second Tuesday of each odd month and renamed themselves the Georgia Arborist Association as new members joined from Columbus and Macon,.
In the early 1990s, when Tyer joined the Board of the ISA Southern Chapter, the GAA started promoting certification, holding tree climbing competitions, and offering training sessions. By attending the trainings, certified arborists were able to earn “continuing education units,” a requirement of their professional certification, from the ISA. In 1996 the GAA hosted our first annual Tree Climbing Competition, which continues to this day.
In 2006, the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) provided the GAA with an Urban and Community Forestry Grant to fund a GAA executive director position. As part of the grant requirements, the GAA became incorporated through the Georgia Secretary of State in March 2006. The GAA hired its first part-time executive director in 2007 (this position is now full time). In 2009 the IRS granted the GAA non-profit (501-c3) status. Though the original GFC grant ended in 2011, the GAA has had a full-time executive director since 2014; this position is paid for through memberships and programming revenues.
GAA achieved independent chapter status within the ISA in 2022. This milestone was achieved due to the organization’s growing membership base and its a commitment to consistently deliver high-quality educational programs and outreach initiatives.
In 2024, the GAA hired a full-time Outreach Coordinator funded by a grant from the GFC. This person’s role is to help extend our activities into underserved communities in Georgia. The outreach coordinator also supports the GAA’s commitment to inclusivity by developing and promoting Spanish-language educational trainings and other opportunities within our community.
Today the GAA operates with one full-time executive director, a part-time administrative professional, our outreach coordinator, and a 15-member Board of Directors. Our activities are supported by a great many volunteers from the arboriculture, academic, non-profit and tree-loving communities. In addition, our organization receives corporate and professional support from a variety of industries, organizations and individuals.
