At this event, attendees will learn about the High Voltage Safety Act and how it impacts private and commercial tree work. We will also touch on incidental line clearance certification and the 811 Process for requesting scheduled power outages.

      A bit about this event

As most remember, during COVID the GAA transitioned to all virtual classes. We all adapted to this new format out of necessity but many learned virtual format programs were more convenient and time saving. Therefore in 2022 when we brought back in-person bi-monthly trainings, we found that our audience still preferred learning from home for these 1-hour events. We decided to keep the bi-monthly trainings all virtual - this allowed us to continue to reach all parts of Georgia and way far beyond that. However, the need to network throughout different parts of Georgia is still highly requested by membership. Therefore, the quarterly Educational Happy Hour was born!

The goal of this event is to hold 1x per quarter in a different area of Georgia to increase industry engagement, membership and encourage professional connections through networking across the state. Locations are chosen based on demand/requests from membership. If you would like the event in your area, please request so here.

We will be holding these events on Fridays in the hope that families can plan a weekend get-away in the area and bring more than just locals to the networking events. Let's all get together and make new connections! We have included below some information about the area - places to stay, local events, etc!

If you are interested in becoming TRAQ qualified, please take some time to read the “ISA TRAQ Application Guide” available here - TRAQ-App-Guide.pdf . The guide will provide details about the application process and let you know what pre-requisites are required to apply for the credential.

The TRAQ course and credential provide an opportunity for professionals in the arboriculture industry to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.

      COURSE DESCRIPTION

Earning the qualification requires attendance at a 2-day educational course followed by a ½ day assessment that includes both a written and field exams. The first two days are typically 8am-5pm and the third day (exam day) is 8am-noon. It is required that you attend the entire course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive this qualification. Coffee and a light breakfast are typically included each day along with lunch the first two days. If overnight travel is needed you will need to make hotel reservations on your own.

At the bottom of this email you will find recommended accommodations as well as more information about the location

The course includes Tree Biology and Mechanics, Tree Inspection and Assessment, Data Analysis and Risk Categorization, and Risk Reporting. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) Course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Once registered, you will receive a course Manual and a Course Workbook that you can read and study to prepare for the course. It is strongly suggested that you read the materials prior to the course. Not all of the materials on the exams will be covered in detail in the classroom. The Manual and Workbook are essential parts of the learning process for this course.

      Quarterly Education & Happy Hour

      INVESTIGATING THE STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS

      OF A TREE:

The Resistograph and the Sonic Tomograph

      Speakers

      Peter Jenkins

      Tree Inspection.com, LLC

      Ellen Bauske, Ph.D.

Two sophisticated tests give arborists the ability to assess a tree’s internal structure and stability. To “see” and quantify decay and cavities, the Resistograph records the resistance to a drill as it is pushed into the tree at various points around the trunk or branch circumference. The tomograph detects and quantifies decay and cavities differently: it tracks the speed of sound waves as they are pulsed through a cross-section of the tree; it then produces a color-coded image of the results. In this outdoor workshop, participants will learn about both technologies, view demonstrations of their use on a live, compromised tree, compare the output from both machines, and gain an understanding of when and where each testing method can be beneficial, especially as part of the “save or remove” decision-making process.

      About our Speakers:

      Peter Jenkins:

Peter Jenkins, also known as “Treeman,” is an ISA-certified and TRAQ-trained arborist. He has worked in the Atlanta metropolitan area for over 40 years, first as climber for his own tree service, Treeman, Inc., and now as the lead inspector for his company, TreeInspection.com, LLC. Peter is a founding member of the GAA and has served it in many capacities, including as its president and as a volunteer instructor at many of its workshops and seminars. He has used his Resistograph to check trees since it first came out in the 1990’s, and is also now using the Tomograph as well. He also trains entry-level climbers for a career in tree work through his other business, Tree Climbers International, Inc.

      Ellen Bauske:

Dr. Ellen Bauske is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist (SO-7258B) and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. She is retired from the University of Georgia after serving as program co-ordinator for the Georgia Center for Urban Agriculture.
